Our friend Arthur...

All foxed out we headed back eastwards on Monday in search of snow and some rather large marine animals... we weren't exactly expecting to find these in the same place, but well, you will see!

We had a quick morning hike up to the Franz Josef Glacier, as you do. Turns out that massive rock falls recently have left Josef unaccessible except by Heli-hiking (you get dropped off higher up the glacier in a helicopter... nice huh?!), but it's now inaccessible from the bottom hence our hike up the Fox Glacier instead. Anyhoooo, here's Franz for any Glacier fans out there...
...and that's as close as we were allowed to get...
...but we did see some fab waterfalls on the way there and back...
...pretty no?! AND I got this corker of a piccie, possibly my favourite pic so far (yes, it even beats the mushrooms ones...!)
Ooooooooooooooooooo! Love it!

So, our journey east took us across Arthur's Pass, it was touch and go as to whether the Pass would be open due to a "large dump" (yes, this is actually what the locals said, snigger snigger...) of snow recently. Luckily for us (otherwise long detour north) it was open, and as we set forth into the hills the sun began to set... and here we fell in love with Arthur! Breathtakingly beautiful... no?!

And of course, all this snow meant one very happy husband...
(...and actually as I write this we're in the air leaving our beloved NZ and it's beautiful snow capped peaks behind... sniff sniff!)

Still, onwards to the East Coast... and quick tale of woe before we do... we had our most embarrassing moment so far on this trip as we chugged up Arthurs Pass in our little hire car, engine screaming all the way up the hills and around the corners... we oooo'ed and ahhhh'ed at the passing scenery... and then sank down in our seats in complete embarrassment as we were overtaken on one of the many hills by a lorry... towing another lorry... yeahhhhhh, rock and roll! ;)

More adventures on the East Coast to follow x x x

  1. Your Great Great Uncle Arthur had a farm in North Canturbury. He was Granny's Uncle and son of Edward. It was Edward who emmigrated to New Zealand on the sailing ship "Wanganui" from London on his honeymoon with Lizzie, on September 7th 1879 and started the farm.
