Pit stop in Hue... a little treasure amidst the ruins...
Luckily for us our 'sleeper bus journey from hell' was broken up with a 5 hour stop in Hue. Another beautiful Unesco world heritage site... in a nutshell, the Citadel here was built in c1800 in an effort to unite Northern and Southern Vietnam, they essentially moved the Capital from Hanoi in the north to here, Hue, in central Vietnam. Sat on the Perfume river, the citadel was obviously once a stunning beautiful complex of over 200 temples and palaces... sadly, the French burnt it and the Americans bombed it, and although a lot of restoration is going on there isn't much left of it's orgins... the occasional restored building, and the glimmer of it's former beauty amongst the ruins... Oh what it must have been like in it's hey day!
